Ronde 1

Hester Schaart, clinical psychologist specialized in heartbreak | Praktijk voor Psychologie Schaart | EN
Hester Schaart is an independent clinical psychologist since 2008, who originally specialized in Child and Adolescent Psychology. After having gained years of work experience within child and youth mental health care and psychiatry, she set up her own practice.

As a clinical psychologist, she treats adults who are struggling with complex feelings of grief after a love break (or divorce), i.e. serious heartbreak. In her work she likes to use a combination of different methodologies, including Schema Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, EMDR and Solution Focused Therapy. She is currently setting up, and implementing, a treatment offer for adults with severe heartbreak that has lasted for more than 1 year. When heartbreak lasts this long, it has a very negative effect on the quality of life. When all kinds of psychological complaints (such as a mood disorder, an anxiety disorder or stress regulation disorder) arise, then psychological treatment is indicated. She provides psycho-education about this form of grief processing, has set up a digital meeting place (The Heartbreak Café) and has also developed a special eHealth program. All of this is a beautiful and unique offering for those who want to heal their broken heart wholeheartedly.

Hester’s lecture during the Lustrum Congress will be about the emotional consequences of this specific loss experience. Such various psychological complaints will be explored in-depth and explained. Why is this form of grieving different from a final loss? Why does one person suffer more from a broken heart than another? All this will be answered during Hester’s interactive lecture!

Er is een continue stroom van informatie, (sociale) verzoeken en eindeloze to do lijstjes die gewild en ongewild een beroep doen op jouw aandacht. Aandacht is misschien wel ons kostbaarste bezit. Er wordt veel geld mee verdiend. Frank van der Velde, Professor Technical Cognition | University of Twente | EN
Frank van der Velde is professor of Technical Cognition at the University of Twente. He has an education in cognitive psychology (PhD) and physics (Msc). His research concerns the development of (neuro)cognitive architectures of processes such as language or visual attention. One aim is to apply these architectures (models) in technical systems such as robots. This will also be the topic of the presentation. Artificial intelligence has developed rapidly over the last few years. But there are also limits as to what artificial systems can do, in particular when these systems have to operate in uncertain ‘human-like’ situations. Interestingly, one can see that more and more insights from cognitive psychology are used with the aim to solve these problems in line with the way that humans deal with these situations.

Marchien Giaccotto, GZ-Psycholoog | Novicare | NL

Dr. Marcia Goddard, D&I/culture consultant, MSc Clinical Neuropsychology, PhD Social Neuroscience. | Brain Matters Consulting | EN
I am a neuroscientist on a mission. I left academia a number of years ago to focus on building bridges between science and business. My specific expertise is work floor behavior: how do you create a company culture that allows people to thrive? For the past years I have used neuroscientific insights to help organizations grow. In addition to my consulting work, I was the Head of Science and Innovation at international recruitment agency YoungCapital, as well as Head of People & Culture at impact company Tony’s Chocolonely. Many of my insights come from studying behavior and culture in Formula 1 teams. In my work, I combine my neuroscientific expertise with business experience in HR leadership roles to develop and implement holistic, comprehensive strategies, policies, programs, and interventions related to work floor behavior.

What if you have a degree in psychology and a PhD in neuroscience, but decide that you don’t like the academic culture? But what if you are determined to still ‘do science’? That’s what I did, with everyone and their mothers telling me it was a horrible idea. In my workshop during the SPS-NIP Lustrum Congress, I will share my career story: from Assistant Professor, to Head of People & Culture at Tony’s Chocolonely, to working with Columbia University, the UC Berkeley Social Interaction lab and Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to bring the science of wellbeing to the largest global corporates in the world. The main takeaway: be stubborn about your goals, and flexible about your methods!

Vincent Siderius, co-founder Emotiplus and sports psychologist | Emotiplus | EN

The day after graduating Vincent and his classmate Sebastian started their company, Emotiplus. If he is brutally honest, it was without a clear plan and without any prior experience in entrepreneurship. The only thing they knew was that emotions are the most important factor in a (sport) performance and that apparently not a lot of people are aware of this. Helping those people was their — very abstract — mission.

In his lecture during the Lustrum Congress, Vincent will tell you about the last four years as an entrepreneur. He will talk about the path he took together with his co-founder, about the successes, but mainly about the mistakes, because that’s where you learn the most.

If you are thinking about starting your own (coaching) company as a psychology student, this lecture is for you. It might save you a lot of time in the future!

Anouk recently joined the Dutch police as an investigative psychologist after finishing her master degree in legal psychology, and working for the Dutch Department of Defense.
