The Dutch Association of Psychologists (NIP) finds it is very important that the work of psychologists is of good quality. That is why the NIP has drawn up a Code of Ethics for Psychologists and also the new Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017. The Code of Ethics contains guidelines and rules of conduct that apply to the professional conduct of a psychologist. The basic principles are that the psychologist must behave responsible, integer, respectful and with expertise.
The Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017 is an elaboration and specification of the Code of Ethics and contains guidelines and information for making a responsible choice of instruments and the proper use of psychodiagnostic instruments in the context of psychodiagnostics and /or psychological interventions. The Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017 is a completely revised version of the Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2010 (Dutch only).
The new Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017 contains extensive explanations on topics such as:
- the principles when choosing a test
- the benefits and limitations of using tests in the psychodiagnostic process
- the use of tests with special groups
- the test-taking requirements
- the assessment procedure
- the reporting of test results
- the rights of the client during test use
Attention is also paid to the test reviews carried out by the Dutch Committee on Tests and Testing (COTAN) and how these reviews can be used by the psychologist as an aid in making a responsible choice for an instrument.
In this context, relevant cases are discussed in all chapters of the Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017, so that theory and practice come together. This makes the Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017 an informative guide for psychologists and other test users when it comes to making a good choice of instruments and test use.
Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017
The Governing Board of the NIP adopted the Guidelines for the Use of Tests on 22 January 2018. The revision of the Guidelines has been prepared by a delegation of members of the Dutch Committee on Tests and Testing (COTAN). The NIP’s Ethics Committee (BEZ) discussed the Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017 as well, and assessed in particular whether it complies with the Code of Ethics. The Guidelines for the Use of Tests 2017 are an important quality instrument of the NIP as a guideline for the professional activities of the psychologist.
